Should I apply to multiple jobs at the one company?

Have you been applying to a bunch of roles at the same company? Are you wondering if that looks keen or just a bit desperate? Let me give you the recruiters inside scoop on the matter.

Here’s the Lowdown on Those Application Systems

Here’s the thing – with most applicant tracking systems you have 1 profile per email address and it shows all of your applications here. So if you apply a lot and a recruiter views your profile they’ll notice it. Some recruiters might think you’re not sure what you want, while others might see it as you really wanting to be part of their team.

For the Smaller Companies – Keep It Cool

Chasing a role at a smaller company? I’d recommend keeping it to a couple of applications. In these places, they notice if you’re applying left, right, and center. Pick the role that you are most likely to get an interview for and apply to that one, you will find that good recruiters think about the big picture and will match you with a different role if it makes more sense after speaking with you. The one caveat to this is age of posting and job applicants, if the role you are most qualified for looks to of been posted an age ago or has 1000s of applicants, I’d find a balance between your skills and the freshest posting.

Mixing It Up? Choose Wisely

Fancy different roles like accountant and project manager? Better to choose one, mate. Applying for totally different jobs can make it seem like you're just throwing your hat in the ring for anything. Red flag.

Big Companies – A Different Story

With the big companies, you can relax a bit more. Go for the roles that match what you’re good at. They get so many apps, you won’t stick out by applying for a few.

Don’t Forget the Power of Networking

In this market, standing out can be a real challenge and the traditional application route is often hit or miss. So don’t forget about networking. Sometimes a good chat can open doors faster than any application. It's all about making those connections.

What’s the Verdict?

Applying to loads of jobs at one company? It’s a bit tricky. For smaller firms, don’t go nuts with applications. For the big ones, focus on fit. And always, always, keep up with the networking.
