Switch It Up: Finding Focus in Your Job Search Outside the Home

Hello, job seekers! If you're finding it hard to focus on your job search (Hitting refresh on “jobs near me” on google is an awful strategy), it might be due to too many distractions at home. Maybe it's catching up on episodes of Below Deck, playing with your dog, or finding any excuse not to look for a job. Fortunately, there are several free(ish) options to consider that can help you get in the zone and mix things up for a day. I've found that being around people really motivates me, and it might just do the same for you. Let's dive into the top 5 places that could help you up your job search game and maybe even feel a bit more alive whilst doing so!

  1. Local Libraries: Ah, the classic choice! Libraries are the unsung heroes of focus. With their quiet ambiance and rows of books, they're perfect for deep concentration. Plus, its free wifi and there are loads of them about, heck you might even spend a couple of hours reading and learn something new whilst your there! I spoke to Harry, a client I’ve been working with for the last 4 weeks that has spent the last 6 months searching for a job and he said “When I was looking for a job, the only thing that kept me sane was those 2 days a week in the library. I started the search only looking for remote jobs but as I spent more time around people, I realized how much it motivated and inspired me and so after some solid coaching, I ended up landing a hybrid job”.

  2. Coffee Shops: Hustle and bustle job searching, if you thrive on a bit of background buzz to get those gears turning this could be your spot and like libraries there are loads of them around with free Wifi. The one downside is that you will probably have to buy a drink and might even get lured in by something tasty, so I wouldn’t class it as 100% free but it’s still a proper good change of scenery.

  3. Parks: If you live in Canada and are reading this blog in the winter, you might be saying, “Not a chance Joseph” but if that weather is nice and you can teather off your phone, then I’d 100% give this a go. Fresh air and focus, plus you might even get sweet tan.

  4. Co-Working Spaces (Trial Days): These places are designed for productivity. Many offer trial days, so you can test the waters without a commitment. It's also a great way to meet other professionals – who knows, networking might just land you a job! I am in one right now as I write this and I have to say, its the perfect place for me to focus and get things done but also feel alive at the same time. This might sound cheesy but working in the basement for the past couple of years led me to being more introverted and making that step back out into society has really helped me with my overall mental health.

  5. Condo Common Areas: If you live in a condo, don't overlook the common areas. They often have tables and comfy chairs – perfect for a change of scenery without going too far. I’m not sure about working in a condo common area you don’t live in mind haha!
